Pros & Cons

BEST if you:

  • Like bit sinkage but don’t want to be stuck totally in the bed.
  • Are a light or average weight side sleeper
  • Suffer from shoulder pain
  • Are seeking ample pressure relief

NOT IDEAL if you:

  • Back or stomach sleeper with the preference of firm beds
  • Want mattress to be delivered and set up at home
  • Want a bouncy mattress
  • Need more support

Firmness

Firmness is a problematic feature as its measure varies from person to person. Firmness depends on body type, sleeping position, etc. On a firmness scale of 1-10, the Puffy Lux Hybrid scales 5.5, implying it is a medium soft mattress. The mattress is soft to touch and feels very comfortable. As one lays down, the mattress conforms to the body curvature and offers a great amount of pressure relief. For a heavyweight person, the Puffy Lux feels to be medium-soft, whereas for a lightweight individual, the mattress might feel medium firm. Overall it is a soft and plush mattress providing excellent support, thus making it one of the most comfortable beds available in the market today.

Material & Construction

The Puffy Lux Hybrid comes with a top cover made of polyester, which is stain resistant, implying that if required, stains can be removed, and the mattress can be machine washed. The stain-resistant cover makes the mattress feel soft and luxurious too. It’s also hypoallergenic; thus, the bed stays fresh for a long time. The several comfort layers help in dissipating heat from the mattress. The grip base layer allows the mattress to be placed on the bed frame or foundation. Below is a detailed construction of the mattress.

Repositioning

Repositioning means that sleepers can change position easily. In Puffy Lux Hybrid it is easy to switch between positions because of its quick responsiveness. There’s not much resistance at all, which is not the case with memory foam beds.

Comfort, Back Support, Pressure Relief

The Puffy Lux hybrid measures between 5-5.5 on the soft-firm scale, implying that the mattress has an incredibly soft feel and is ultra-comfortable, like the Puffy Lux mattress. The Lux Hybrid also provides a perfect blend of support and pressure relief while cradling the body. The mattress is firm enough to let heavy areas sink into it comfortably. The only difference is that since the Hybrid has pocketed coil layer, it is bouncier and sinks more. Puffy Lux Hybrid provides a decent pressure relief to the hips and shoulders of the sleeper, without letting them sink or float too much. The mattress is soft enough to cushion and cradle your body and prevent the appearance of pressure points regardless of which position you choose to sleep in. Due to the presence of pocketed coils, the Lux Hybrid has enhanced airflow than the Puffy Lux mattress, giving a decent temperature regulation and wicking away any heat.

Cooling & Temperature Control

Though the top layer of the Puffy Lux Hybrid resembles memory foam, but the sleepers neither feel hot nor cold rather it is temperature neutral. The gel infusions in the memory foam are included to reduce heat retention. Hot sleepers may still find the mattress somewhat warm. However, for more air to circulate through the mattress, the coil core provides the required support resulting in cooler night sleep.

Motion Isolation and Sharing a Bed

Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress does an excellent job of deadening any movements in the mattress. So, if your partner moves around a lot while sleeping, this mattress will be a good option. Minimal cross-bed movement can be observed in this model thus, a better night’s sleep can be assured using Lux Hybrid. The mattress is therefore a great choice for couples. Even on a smaller size like a full or a queen, good motion isolation is observed.

Edge Support

Edge support is important for couples, as poor performance here limits both sleeping and sex too close to the center of the bed, rather than its perimeter. Getting in and out of bed may be disturbing to your partner since the bed may bend when sitting on the edge. The Puffy Lux Hybrid offers excellent edge support, not the best but also not the worst. Customers have highly reviewed the The Puffy Lux mattress  because of its motion isolation, comfort, pressure relief, and decent edge support.

Recommendation based on sleeping style

Preferences of back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and side sleepers are all different and require different forms of pressure relief. Side sleepers look for a bed with a soft top so that hips and shoulders can sink in like the Puffy Lux Hybrid. Back sleepers look for a medium feel, with adequate support, and stomach sleepers prefer a firmer mattress. Hot sleepers enjoy sleeping on a mattress that keeps them cool during the night. A heavier body type also likes a firmer mattress, even if they sleep on their side. Based on different sleepers’ requirement, the mattress can be a good choice for almost all sleeper types. A detailed description of how each sleeper fits the mattress is given below

  • Side Sleepers: Compared to the original Puffy, the Puffy Lux mattress offers a less medium-firm feel, making it an excellent option for side sleepers. The mattress offers a balance of support and pressure relief, thus, cradling the sleeper’s shoulders and hips well. However, heavyweight sleepers may not find the mattress so comfortable. The Lux Hybrid is good for individuals who weigh 230 pounds or less.
  • Back Sleepers: People who sleep on their back require more support, particularly around the hips, which may sink into softer mattresses and prevent proper spine alignment. Less pressure relief is required for back sleepers as sleeping on the back causes fewer pressure points than other sleep styles. The Puffy Lux is a good option for back sleepers; however, the Original Puffy being firmer will work better for such sleepers. Sleepers below 130 pounds who sleep on their back will find that they mostly sleep on the mattress rather than sleeping in the mattress. The medium firmness level of the mattress gives these sleepers nice lumbar support with the right amount of cushioning. For sleepers weighing above 130 pounds, the mattress may sink too much, which may lead to dislocation of the spine and can cause discomfort. For such back sleepers, a firmer mattress is preferred.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Stability and support are crucial to “stomach sleepers” so that they don’t experience lower back or hip pain. Heavyweight stomach sleepers need to avoid the Lux models to prevent their hips from sinking too much into the mattress resulting in back pain. Stomach sleepers below 130 pounds will feel comfortable and supported when sleeping on the Puffy Lux Hybrid. However, stomach sleepers weighing more than 130 pounds may find that the mattress provides insufficient support because of its medium-firm construction and plush comfort layers.
  •  Combination Sleepers – Those who alternate between various positions: The Puffy Lux Hybrid can adapt to the bodily movements of the sleepers throughout the night, thus making it an excellent choice for combination sleepers to enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.

Pros & Cons

BEST if you:

  • Are light- and medium-weight side sleepers’
  • Don’t need much comfortable material
  • Are a back sleeper in need of comfort and support
  • Prefer a balanced foam feel

NOT IDEAL if you:

  • Need supportive mattress
  • Are a stomach sleeper in need of extra support under hips
  • Heavy side sleepers in need of a thicker comfort layer

Firmness

Whether a mattress feels firm or soft, it is fairly subjective. All mattresses should be supportive of body weight, promote healthy spine alignment, and ensure comfortable and restful sleeping. Whether a mattress is fluffy and squishy (what mattress companies call soft or plush), or less so (what companies call firm) is purely defined based on personal preferences.

The Puffy Mattress has a medium feel that corresponds to a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale, so one will feel a close body contour as the foam responds and adapts to one’s body – especially if someone’s weight is more than 230 pounds. The support core of the mattress is high-density polyfoam. Thus, the Puffy mattress measures 10 inches thick and is considered a medium-profile bed.

The mattress may give a little sinkage experience to back sleepers. Still, a supportive bounce is provided by the Climate Comfort and Support foam immediately, which helps keep the spine aligned and the lumbar area supported. Side sleepers are provided with an outstanding balance of support and pressure relief. However, heavy side sleepers may prefer a softer mattress such as the Puffy Lux. The mattress is not ideal for stomach sleepers who would find the mattress too soft for spine alignment.

Material & Construction

The flagship Puffy Mattress is made with a gel-infused memory foam comfort layer, followed by a transitional polyfoam layer that helps to sleep very comfortably. This means the mattress offers pressure relief, back placement, and also comfy assistance. Though the mattress features a thin, breathable, and soft polyester cover, the overall feel and performance of the mattress are not affected.

Repositioning

Repositioning means that sleepers can change position quickly and easily. Puffy being an ultra-conforming mattress, does not support easy surface movement. The memory foam tends to hug the body of the sleeper when they lie on the mattress. So, when they make a movement, the mattress retains that impression for some time. The Puffy mattress tends to inhibit activity.

Comfort, Back Support, Pressure Relief

Most of us lack the awareness that our spine is responsible for most of our movements as it connects all the major muscles responsible for movements. Back pain is a common problem that impacts our daily life and disrupts our sleep. Chronic back pain results in poor sleep, which can be very frustrating as it makes one feel significantly worse during waking hours. Chronic back pain may be sometimes be challenging to find a comfortable sleeping position. Thus, it is essential to understand that different sleeping positions require different types of cushioning, contouring, and mattress firmness levels to avoid worsening back pain.

The Puffy mattress has a medium firmness level. It does not have a typical thick, dense memory foam feel but a relatively light, airy feel. It is a highly comfortable mattress providing proper support, responsiveness, and pressure relief. It will be a safe bet for people who don’t have any specific criteria while choosing a mattress. Puffy offers decent pressure relief to the hips and shoulders of the sleepers without letting them sink or float too much. It is a good mattress for people of all sizes, though sleepers with a heavy body should opt for other options in the market.

Cooling & Temperature Control

Foam mattresses generally do not allow much room for airflow, and memory foam is known explicitly for trapping body heat. But Puffy is a temperature-neutral mattress and does not trap any heat like memory foam mattresses. Puffy features a breathable cover and a cooling gel infused in the top layer of memory foam, it helps to radiate some heat. The second layer of the mattress is designed to regulate body temperature. Thus, the mattress will not let the sleeper feel particularly hot or cold.

Motion Isolation and Sharing a Bed

This category rates how well a mattress can prevent other sleepers in a bed from feeling when their sleep partner changes positions. The Puffy mattress is outstanding at isolating motion. When there is a movement or some weight is applied on one part of the bed, much motion transfer is not caused across the surface of the mattress. Both memory foam and polyfoam are broadly known for isolating motion and are much better springs and coils mattress material.

For couples who share beds, motion isolation is essential for both partners to sleep well once the other moves. The Puffy mattress is good for couples as it isolates motion well. Thus, partners don’t have to be concerned if one makes a move while sleeping.

Edge Support

Edge support is an important consideration for couples, as poor performance here limits both sleeping and sex to close to the center of the bed, rather than its perimeter. Getting in and out of bed may also disturb your partner, since the bed may bend when sitting on the edge. Puffy performs decently in this area and in fact, performs better than all-foam mattresses. It provides above-average edge support. When one gets on and off the mattress, the perimeter tends to sink slightly, or when someone sleeps near the edges, some bounce-back and decent reinforcement is observed. People who weigh on the lighter side will feel comfortable along the edges of the mattress, but those who weigh above 230 pounds will sink in more. To make the mattress more sleeper friendly, Puffy is redesigning to improve edge support.

Recommendation based on sleeping style

We all want to sleep well at night, but it’s easier said than done. No matter what position we sleep in, we all need to sleep well so our bodies can heal and rejuvenate. Basically, there are three sleep postures: Side, back, and stomach sleepers. Therefore, all three have different needs and specific experiences regarding the comfort, support, and flexibility that the mattress should offer them.

  • Side Sleepers: More than half of the people sleep on the side. In this position, most of the weight of the body rests on the shoulders, hips, and legs. Thus shoulders, hips, and legs should sink into the bed enough to relieve pressure points and support the spine appropriately aligned throughout the night for a good and pain-free night’s sleep. The Puffy mattress provides a proper alignment for side sleepers. It offers a good blend of support and pressure relief, cradling the sleeper’s shoulders and hips well. The Puffy is a good choice for side sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less. However, sleepers with a heavy body may not find the mattress so comfortable.
  • Back Sleepers: The National Sleep Foundation considers back sleeping, with arms at the sides, the ideal position to sleep. This sleeping position helps to keep the head and spine in a neutral alignment which in turn eliminates the pressure that causes aches and pains and allows back muscles to relax. Back sleeping is favorable for people with back pain or tightness. This sleeping position reduces acid reflux by keeping the head above the esophagus to prevent stomach acid from coming up to the digestive tract. People sleeping on their back require more support, particularly around the hips, which may sink into softer mattresses and prevent proper spinal alignment. Back sleepers also need less pressure relief, as the position causes fewer pressure points than other sleep styles. Puffy offers necessary back support and comfort. The heavier body parts will sink to the mattress while providing the ideal spinal alignment. Back sleepers under 130 pounds will find that the Puffy mattress meets their needs, and those under 230 pounds will also find the mattress a good fit as it provides lumbar support, which is further supported by the medium firmness of the mattress.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Sleeping on the stomach makes it hard for the spine to stay neutral but is suitable for people who snore. People sleeping on their stomachs put more pressure on the mattress, especially around the midsections, so a supportive mattress that prevents the risk of sinking and harming the spines is the best suited. The Puffy mattress may relieve the stomach sleepers but may not be the best option, especially for heavier people who may not find an excellent spine alignment while sleeping.
  • Combination Sleepers – Those who alternate between various positions: The hybrid construction of the Puffy mattress makes it a good choice for combination sleepers and can accommodate all body types. The soft feel and the sturdy edges make it perfect for combination sleepers who like to change positions during sleep.
