Product Description

The Spindle is an innovative all-natural organic mattress at a comfortable budget that sells direct to consumers. Spindle was launched in 2013 and has craved its reputation and prestige among people. Spindle uses 100% organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool to design its mattress. It makes only one mattress: a natural latex mattress with a firm or medium-firm support level.

Natural latex is extorted from the sap of rubber trees thus is free of harsh chemicals found in other mattress materials. Latex being a tried material for natural, comfortable, and durable mattresses, the company chooses latex as the primary material for its mattresses.

The Spindle features an organic cotton cover that is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified, organic wool batting with Oeko-Tex and GOTS certification, and natural Dunlop latex which is also Oeko-Tex certified thus is free of any harmful chemicals. The mattress is available in five sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, and King.

Firmness

Firmness defines how soft or hard a mattress can be; thus, it is a very subjective matter. A particular bed may be soft to one and firm to the other. It depends on personal choice, body weight, and type. Whether soft or firm, a mattress should support body weight, promote healthy spine alignment, and ensure comfortable and restful sleeping.

The Spindle is a 10-inch-thick mattress made of a 1-inch top and three layers of 3-inch all-natural Dunlop latex. Spindle offers two types of firmness: medium and firm, as it comes with one firm latex layer and two medium firm latex layers. The three-layered Dunlop latex offers contouring, pressure relief, and back alignment and support. The latex retains a traditional springiness that does not allow sleepers to feel stuck in the mattress. The Spindle is versatile as it will enable you to adjust the firmness levels by rearranging the order of the three latex layers. This allows you experience a different feel sleeping on the mattress each night. While purchasing, you can order the layers of the bed as per your comfort level.

Material & Construction

The Spindle mattress is made with layers of natural Dunlop latex, wool batting, and organic cotton. Spindle’s latex is from the rubber tree ‘Hevea Brasiliensis’. Dunlop latex is durable offers bounce and breathability. The elasticity of latex is low; hence it will not compress directly under your body like memory foam or polyfoam.; instead, it will distribute the compression over the mattress, allowing you to experience sleeping ‘on’ the mattress, not ‘in’ the mattress.

The different layers of the Spindle are detailed below:

  • Layer 1: The top layer is an organic cotton cover that is stretchable enough to move with the latex layer. An inch of wool is quilted into the cover that helps to regulate temperature. This layer makes a soft and cozy sleeping surface.
  • Layer 2: Next is the body of the mattress, which is three-layered. It uses 3-inches of Dunlop latex that can be rearranged according to your need and is sourced from Sri Lanka. The first layer is a soft, more responsive latex that offers contouring and pressure relief. The second layer is firm and provides back alignment and further pressure point relief. The last layer is the firmest, lays the mattress’s foundation, and offers support for the back. If you want, you can unzip the cotton cover and change the order of latex layers, which makes the mattress feel soft or firm, depending on the configuration.

Repositioning

Repositioning describes the ability to change positions easily while sleeping. The buoyant nature of the latex makes the Spindle a mattress on which movement is relatively easy. The three latex layers regain their shapes quickly when the sleeper moves or changes position. Latex also does not hug too closely to the body like memory foam or polyfoam, so sleepers should not feel stuck in the mattress.

Comfort, Back Support, Pressure Relief

Buying a mattress can be difficult as there is a variety of them available in the market. The right mattress will give you relief from pain upon waking up. So, pain relief is vital for most people looking to buy a new mattress. Back pain can only be relieved when the spine is relaxed.

The Spindle will be medium or firm, depending on body weight and personal preference. The mattress gives a soft and bouncy feel without experiencing stuck or suffocation. Organic latex offers a sleep surface that conforms to your body with minimal sink. Pressure from the hips and shoulders are relieved, and the body’s natural curves are well supported while lying on the Spindle. Sleepers have the freedom of adjusting the firmness by rearranging the latex layers, thus enjoying the required comfort. This makes the mattress appealing and unique.

The suitability of the mattress for different sleeping positions is detailed below:

  • Back sleepers: Back sleepers need support under their spine and neck to sleep correctly. The three layers of latex in the Spindle adjusts as per the curves of the body of the sleepers, thus letting back sleepers sink a little. The wool batting also offers a cushion that back sleepers would enjoy. The adjustable latex layers help back sleepers find enough support and promote spinal alignment. Back sleepers whose weight is between 130 and 230 pounds will prefer the medium version, while those above 230 pounds will enjoy sleeping on the firm version of the mattress.
  • Side Sleepers: Side sleepers put the majority of their weights on their hips and shoulders. The quilted cover of the Spindle cushions the bed surface, and the latex layers contours the body. Side sleepers whose weight is between 130 and 230 pounds will get pressure relief and spine support sleeping on the medium version, while those weighing above 230 pounds will find the firmer version of Spindle more comfortable to sleep on.
  • Stomach sleepers: Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress that would enable them to keep their hips elevated to prevent sinkage. The Spindle’s medium firmness may not be comfortable enough, but the firm version will give stomach sleepers ample support from sinking deep into the mattress, such that their hips remain elevated and prevent them. Stomach sleepers will need to rearrange the latex layers accordingly.
  • Heavy sleepers: Heavy sleepers need a firm mattress for restful sleep. Heavy sleepers will prefer the firm option over its medium counterpart. Since the latex layers can be adjusted, sleepers above 230 pounds can rearrange and will feel more comfortable on the firm comfort layer over a medium transitional layer.
Cooling & Temperature Control

The most critical ambiance determining the quality and duration of the body’s recovery during sleep is a substantial decrease in the core body temperature. Spindle uses breathable materials like ventilated latex layers that help air circulate in the mattress’s interior, thus regulating temperature quite well. The wool batting reduces heat buildup and wicks away moisture from the sleeper’s body.

Motion Isolation and Sharing a Bed

Motion isolation describes if movement made across one side of the mattress is felt elsewhere on the mattress or not. A mattress with good motion isolation will neutralize activity made on one side of the bed, thus assisting partners in sleeping peacefully.

Latex mattresses are not good at isolating motion. The Spindle, also being a latex-made mattress, is no exception. Latex layers may reduce motion but are unable to eliminate motion transfer completely. Thus, any movement made by one partner can be felt across the other side. The quilted cover helps dampen vibration, spreading across the latex layers.

Edge Support

Edge support defines the support that a mattress can offer around its edges. Edge support helps in stabilizing the perimeter of the mattress. It is essential for couples sharing their bed with partners, as poor performance may disturb their partners while getting in and out of bed, and limit using the full bed for sleeping together and while having sex.

Edge support isn’t impressive in the Spindle mattress. The edges tend to collapse or give a feeling of rolling down when one sits or sleeps near the edges of the mattress, respectively. So, if you like to sleep near the edge of the mattress or have a partner to share your bed with, you need to take this detail into stock before hitting the checkout tab.

Recommendation based on sleeping style

Sleeping peacefully at night is as essential as eating good and nutritious food. Sleeping peacefully helps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Each one of us sleeps differently, and our needs for comfort and support are also very different and unique. The U.S. Center for Disease Control claims that 1 out of 3 people has insomnia leading to various health problems. The

Below is a detailed description of how Spindle is a good fit for different sleep positions.

  • Side Sleepers: Side sleepers prefer a mattress that allows their hips and shoulders to sink in just the right amount, reducing pressure buildup. The latex layer used in the Spindle allows for contouring the different curves of the body, thus providing ultimate comfort and pressure relief from different joints. These layers also help in redistributing the body weight across the mattress. The Spindle is a good option for nearly all types of sleepers, especially light and average-weight sleepers.
  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers need to look for a mattress that supports their back and spine. The quilted cover and latex layers in the Spindle provide back sleepers the necessary support and comfort while sleeping. The latex layers also help in keeping the spine properly aligned.
  • Stomach Sleepers: Stability and support are essential for stomach sleepers not to cause back or hip pain; thus, they need firmer mattresses. As the latex layers can be rearranged, stomach sleepers can adjust the firmness that best supports their hips and midsection. The wool batting layer further adds to the comfort of stomach sleepers. The Spindle is a good choice for light and average-weight sleepers, as it would allow them to enjoy just the right amount of sinkage and support at their mid-section.
  • Combination Sleepers-Those who alternate between various positions: Combination sleepers tend to change positions while sleeping. Combination sleepers will enjoy sleeping on the Spindle as both comfort and support will be provided by the latex layers and wool batting layer.
